Do You Have White Tongue?

“Dr. Lisa, I notice at times when I am brushing my teeth that my tongue has a white coating on it. I try brushing it with my toothbrush, but it seems to come back even if the brushing helps. Why is this and what can I do to fix this issue? ” -Marie, NY

A white coating on your tongue is a sign of a leaky gut, in fact it tells me that your gut is most likely in a severe leaky gut stage where you have on overgrowth of yeast in your gut. What you are seeing on your tongue is yeast (we call this thrush in infants), called Candida Albicans.

Candida Albicans is a pathogen that is normal in your gut, but when it takes over it creates an imbalance in the gut flora (this is the harmony of the various good bacteria in the gut). Since 80% of your immune system is in your gut, a balanced flora is a crucial part of your immune and digestive system and oral health.

Think of a beautiful garden (your balanced gut flora) and how weeds can start to overgrow quite rapidly creating harm to the plants in the garden. If you allow weeds to take over, they will ultimately ruin the garden. When you lose the balanced flora due to an overgrowth of yeast, it will control a large portion of the gut, creating a leaky gut and health problems as a result.

What Causes a Yeast Overgrowth?

The main cause of yeast overgrowth is a leaky gut. Three factors that create a leaky gut are stress, poor diet and antibiotics. You may notice a white coating on your tongue, a white rash in moist ares of the body (look under the breasts, in armpits or on  your skin) or a white pasty vaginal discharge. Signs of an overgrowth of yeast quite often begin before the white coating, rashes or infections begin.

Common signs of yeast overgrowth are chronic fatigue, brain fog, difficulty concentrating, problems staying focused, diarrhea, constipation, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, consuming a lot of sugar in your diet, vaginal yeast infections, fungus infections such as athlete’s foot and toenail fungus, frequent bouts of worry, anxiety and depression, high levels of emotional stress, autoimmune disorder, mood swings and irritability, eating foods high in carbohydrates, craving sugar, skin problems such as dry skin, red skin, acne, eczema, hives, rashes or psoriasis, digestive bloating and gas, urinary tract infections and severe seasonal allergies.

What is a Leaky Gut?

A leaky gut refers to a disorder where certain foods create an inflammatory reaction in your gut, causing harmful particles to leak out of the gut walls. These harmful particles (I like to call them Pac Men) leak into your bloodstream and travel towards places such as skin, joints,thyroid and brain where they create health problems such as chronic fatigue, anxiety, skin problems, joint and muscle pain, digestive upset, lack of focus, depression, thyroid issues, autoimmune disorders, inflammation and vitamin and mineral deficiencies.

Natural Steps You Can Do Right Now

Leaky Gut

Determine if you have a leaky gut and if so, you can take the following steps to begin to repair the gut and restore a balanced flora. If you are not sure how to determine if you have a leaky gut, take my Leaky Gut Quiz here, and I will personally respond with your results.


Once you know you have a leaky gut, you want to focus on restoring the healthy balanced gut flora. Remember, the flora is the good bacteria in your gut which we call probitoics. Taking a high quality probiotic with a good amount of flora will put good bacteria back into your gut, consequently, battling the yeast and also creating a balanced flora. You want to also eat probitoic foods such as fermented sauerkraut and coconut yogurt. I personally use this high quality probiotic with my family.

Aloe Vera Juice

I have been using aloe vera juice for years both in my home and practice for digestive issues. Aloe vera is considered an antibacterial, anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory healer. Think of how breaking an aloe plant and placing it on a burn or skin wound helps. When you have a leaky gut, your gut lining is inflamed and suffering from open wounds creating by cytokine Pac-Men. Aloe is super healing to the gut lining walls. I like this brand here, but some patients like this one.


Garlic has antibacterial, anti-fungal and antiviral protecting properties. It truly is a super food. It’s fungal, bacterial and viral fighting abilities will help decrease the white coating on the tongue, but also fight the cause of the yeast in the mouth which is the yeast overgrowth in the gut (your leaky gut). It also will boost the immune system both in the gut and body. You can take a supplement like this one here, but make sure you eat some real garlic, adding some to recipes and meals.

Coconut Oil Pulling

I have to tell you that my son and I have begun an oil pulling journey and once we are done, we are going to share our results with you. Coconut oil is used to pull the bacteria from the mouth as it removes the toxins off the teeth, tongue and mouth. It is much like a natural antiseptic for your mouth. Coconut oil is used for killing yeast in the mouth, but also in cases like mine to repair inflamed gums and the plaque that is squatting and taking up rent there.

I will share with you my natural journey to reverse my plaque gums soon (as it involves a few more natural and easy steps). I use this coconut oil here. All we do is put a tablespoon (well, we started off with 1/2 and once we got use to this odd treatment, we got to 1 tablespoon) in our mouth, swoosh it around for 15 minutes and then spit it out, rinsing with warm water.

Cut Sugar in Your Diet

One of the most important steps you can do to remove the white coating on your tongue for good is to cut out sugar in your diet for at least two weeks.  This is because yeast feeds off of sugar- it is how yeast survives and grows. If you cut off their food source (sugar), it will choke the yeast and it will die. There is a die off stage and important steps and therapeutic foods to take, so I always recommend meeting with a nutritionist like me to learn how to repair you leaky gut, balance your yeast overgrowth and restore a healthy flora so it is done correctly, safely and most effectively.
